We have used intensively USB 3G Huawei E220 modems.
>From memory I think that the best throughput had been 1 SMS every 3
seconds.
As advised by Alvaro, you can set up several modems to get a greater
throughput.

Besides, note that under RHEL, you will need some manual works with
kernel modules to have the modem recognized by RHEL and the device node
created as /dev/ttyUSBX. Or have a look and give a try to

>From Fedora 10, it works fine.
