I have a total beginners question

I'm in the US, which from what I've read make things more complicated.

I want to enable an SMS environment where customers would send a text to a
5-digit number (like twitter uses 40404). Contained in that text would be
their name. I would also like to message them back a confirmation.

The contact log would be stored in a DB (probably lunux / postgres).

I'm not sure where to begin and would like some guidance.

How do I get that 5-digit number?
How do I connect to the cell network to send & receive these messages? Can
it be done with Kannel? I've read that Kannel is for GSM only.
If Kannel is only part of the solution, what other options can fill the gap?

Is there anything else I need to know that I'm not even aware of?

Help is much appreciated!

Thanks

Scott
