1) There have been very good impressions from the Huawei E220 usb modem.
Another very good choice is the serial Wavecom Fastrack.
2) Use Linux as OS. Has better support for modems and hardware than i.e.
Solaris.
3) Usb cable or Serial RS232.
4) User's guide.
