Hi You have a 3rd option: Do nothing on either boxes but do it on your own application that feed sms to opensmppbox.
I do something like that by parsing the bearerbox status page and getting each smsc queue. If you do mess with either box, you will be brancing off kannel/opensmppbox and will not be able -or it will be more difficult- to continue getting improvements to those boxes.
