I have the same problem with a Huawei K3765.
I use it only for receiving sms, haven't tried sending more than a few messages 
at once.
It looses the connection every once in a while and I have to modprobe the 
usbserial module again.

Even, sometimes even I have to power of the system (removing the power cord) 
before it starts to work again. For a while.
I guess those modems are not really robust.
