If your wavecom is a serial device then it should work.
The point where it doesn't anymore if the device is a mode-switching device
(where mode is either storage device or a modem).

I have my devel system in a vm running fedora and it works smoothly.
Don't see why it couldn't work with vmware. Just enable the ports
where your modem is connected to be accessed by your vm.
