Get an irc client. Hexchat is pretty good, you can try some other like
konversation. all you need to do initially is choose a username of your
choce and get it registered with irc server like freenode. and you can
tell your irc client to execute command on startup : /msg NickServ
identify "your_registered_password_for_the_username". it help you
automatically sign-in.
yu can join a channel by using menu, or executing this command : /join
#channel_name. '#' is important. and try to enable logging. will help
you go over conversations in case you miss something.
