GPG (or PGP) is on the development agenda, but as always, there's a lot of other features too. One of the issues with GPG is that gpg and s/mime are very different and the implementations would be more or less separate. Consider what you would do when you want to send an s/mime encrypted message to someone while cc'ing someone who needs gpg encryption. Contributions by others would certainly be appreciated. Martijn is currently attending a conference in Athens, I'm sure he'll share his thoughts when he gets back.
