Strange. The Virtual Appliance also has a firewall and this works without any problem. Are you 100% certain that the user is removed? Depending on the setup, a message for a recipient can be encrypted even if there is no user object for the recipient. If for example there is a valid certificate for the recipient and the default (or domain) settings allow encryption, the message will be encrypted even if there is no user object.
