if so, your comment is valid as long as you dont connect.
as soon as you do, the rest of the world is not reported.

but yes, this is the nature of my goal.

Before you go looking too far, if you're a Gnome user, clicking on the
NM applet shows similar information -- the ESSID names are listed, along
with a mini-bargraph of signal strength and icons for encryption and for
peer-to-peer. (Other DEs probably do something similar).
