As root, check the permissions and extended attributes of /etc/group.
They should look like:
[root@prophead ~]# ls -l /etc/group
-rw-r--r--. 1 root root 1753 Mar 23 17:17 /etc/group
[root@prophead ~]# lsattr /etc/group
--------------e---- /etc/group
Also ensure you're running the yum command as the root user.
