If you do decide you want to beat firefox and thunderbird over the head, this
might have some useful info about making mods to bits of packages so they
stick around across updates:

I use it to automagically re-apply any changes I've made to installed
system files after an update that might have put the stuff I don't want
back (an extreme hack, but after it worked, I stopped improving it
so it never got "elegant" :-).
