I'm not very familiar with Mate and I don't currently have a Mate VM.

However, it seems to be suggesting there could be an issue with restoring the
previous session.  Maybe a
removable device that Mate believes should still be connected but isn't. Or, a
problem with the configuration
of an application which is started by default.  Those can be hard to trace 
down.  I
seem to recall a similar startup
issue that was giving me fits under KDE.  I ended up moving my ~/.config 
directory
out of the way and selectively
moving things back until I found the culprit.
