OK... Just finished a lot of exploring, both in the spin and in the BIOS.
I was able to boot into runlevel 2 as Ed Gresko suggested. When I ran
"journalctl -a" a couple of red entries near the end caught my eye:
DEVICESCAN failed: glob(3) aborted matching pattern /dev/discs/disc*
In the systems table of devices NO devices found to scan
and
ahci 0000:00:17:0: Found 2 remapped NVMe devices
ahci 0000:00:17:0: Switch your BIOS to AHCI mode to use them
I went into the BIOS setup to the Config tab and the Storage entry:

It appears that the F29 MATE-Compiz spin isn't compatible with Intel RST
controllers. Worse, Clonezilla seems to have the same problem. Now I'm
facing a real problem. I don't really know if I can safely break the
mirror and still run Clonezilla to preserve a forensic copy of the
pre-installed Windows 10 image. Similarly, I don't know if switching from
RST to AHCI mode is safely reversible.
Thoughts anyone?
