It doesn't help when things blank the mouse cursor, either.  When VLC
is playing a video file it'll blank the cursor, and the cursor can stay
blanked even when you move it away from the video playback area. 
Sometimes you have to madly mouse all over the table trying to get the
mouse cursor to re-appear.

I think I'll set up xeyes, too.
