The only think I can think of is the journal.  You could look at the
messages from the long running shutdown and see if there are any
related to this.  When I shutdown, if there is something that is
sleeping or suspended, I see a message on the console that it is
waiting for the offending process.  That might make it into the
journal, and give a pointer to the offender.
