xev shows events for most things. I'm not that concerned as I was

It turns out however that you can get the effect of SysRq by sending
magic commands to /proc/sysrq-trigger:

Of course that's only possible if you have access to at least a basic
shell, so probably not that useful if your DE has frozen.
