-j is for bzip2. Your file isn't bzip2 compressed. The file name
indicates that, but is irrelevant for the system. Use
file betterbird-140.2.0.9.en-US.linux-x86_64.tar.xz
to identify the real type.
For xz (as the file name indicates), use -J (uppercase).
You can also leave out the option at all and tar will check which
compression is being used.

On the Search I made, the J was capitalized, but I read it
as a small j
