(Fedora-42 workstation)
Following what's said here:
and here:
I'm trying to turn off copy-on-write and compression on "/home".
I'm logged in as "root"; I'm in "/root".
I moved the original /home aside to /home_old.
I created a new "/home".
I turned off copy-on-write.
But when I try to turn off compression, I get this:
- - - - - -
bash: chattr +m /home
chattr: Invalid argument while setting flags on /home
bash: btrfs property set /home compression none
ERROR: failed to set compression for /home: Invalid argument
- - - - - -
What's wrong?
How should I do this?
First, the re-installation problem was solved. I was not able to
re-install because there was no POST, which in turn prevented me from
accessing BIOS to have boot-up use the live media stick. The shop from
which I bought the computer gave me a couple of things to try.
1. The first thing I tried was unplugging the desktop, waiting several
minutes, plugging it back in, powering it back up, and hitting the Del
key repeatedly. All I got were blank screens.
2. Next I tried turning off the switch at the bottom of the back of the
case, waiting several minutes, turning it back on, powering it back up,
and hitting the Del key repeatedly. That got me into BIOS. I have no
clue as to why this worked, but unplugging did not. The settings were
already as they should have been, except I had to change the boot
order. With this, I was able to re-install Fedora-42 Workstation off
the live media.
I used the custom installation to put the system and user space on
separate drives with the names and space allocations I wanted. I used
BTRFS (the default) for /root and /home, and the recommended defaults
for /boot. This fixed anything I broke earlier in this thread. I used
defaults for BTRFS properties. By the way, Samuel was correct:
compression is off by default.
This thread did convince me to accept COW. Things are as I now want
them. I've marked this thread SOLVED. I thank everyone who tried to help.
