The card is being detected and a driver is loaded.
Although, alsa does not detect the device.

What should I use instead of the update-initramfs?

I do not see a reason to run this. Set the boot option and reboot.

I presume the alsa-base and alsa-utils are the same as alsa-lib 
alsa-plugins-pulseaudio alsa-ucm and alsa-utils? These are the ones currently 
installed.

Then don't change anything.
