Something new has been added: I decided to try booting again to see if I
could get directly into runlevel 3. When I turned my desktop on, the
fan was very noisy and it completely ignored the keyboard. I turned it
off, unplugged the keyboard, plugged it back in and it did the same
thing. It's beginning to look more and more like a hardware issue,
possibly the video card, possibly even the motherboard. If it's the
motherboard, I'm not too surprised because it's about 8 years old. And
if so, at least it managed to hold out until I was able (maybe) to buy a
newer and better one. We'll see...
