Just `chown` the uploads directories to the user WordPress is running
as (most likely "httpd"), then you can `chmod 755` it.

(I'm assuming their doing this with the WordPress interface and not
S/FTP.  It would be a bit more complicated if that were the case, but
that seems unlikely.)
