Hi:
AFAIR that laptop has some Radeon 7500 or something like that. So
that's not helping.
What about open a TTY  (alt+ctrl+f2) is the shell better there? Have
you tested the memory with memtest+ ?
I'm afraid that the lack of 3D rendering capabilities is killing you,
my son uses my old T43 and we're using Gnome but with the "Fallback"
mode, cause even with the i915 intel card it's dead slow.
