If you get a moment, could you send along the output of "sort --version"
on your Gentoo system? Also, do you have POSIXLY_CORRECT defined in your
build environment?

POSIX* is not defined (well not anywhere I could see - checked output of
'env' and examined '/etc/make.conf').
$ sort --version
sort (GNU coreutils) 6.4
