The SRPM is probably your best bet -- glad you got it working. As for the errors, it's because these are C++ files. You need to also set CXXFLAGS to the flags necessary to compile in 64 bit mode (and F77FLAGS and FCFLAGS for Fortran 77 and 90, if you're building those bindings). Hope that helps.
