Well, proprietary cluster management systems have only given me grief until I've replaced them. Anyhow, it shouldn't be necessary to re-install a cluster to make the MPI work. The main reason I see for not using distribution packages directly is that they're typically not built with the features you need, e.g. your parallel filesystem, knem, a different interconnect &c., but in that case it's normally easy to rebuild from modified package source with extra build requirements and modified configure options.
