What do you mean by telling if an image is OK? Without starting the VM I can only think on fsck'ing the partitions to see whether they are ok or not. But I suppose that is not enough.
If you want to manually swap one bad image by another you can find its place in the datastore with "oneimage show <image id>", search for the SOURCE parameter.
