Not sure what you mean by:

Judging from the log, it appears that this operation is taking a bit
less than 8 minutes. This depends on the performance of the storage
backend of the datastores (ie, the hard drives, SAN or NAS).

To achieve a speed up, if your images can be modified, you can try to
set them to 'persistent', so instead of the images being copied, they
will be linked.
