Thanks for your help it has brought me a step closer to the solution.

In the auth_db module the following is stated.

Passwords can be either stored as plain text or pre-calculated HA1
strings.

The passwords I want to import were encrypted using 3DES this is most
likely going to cause problem am I right ?
