I've just downloaded espresso-4.3.1 from here http://qe-forge.org/frs/?group_id=10 and I've found that both .html and .txt files are already present in the Doc/ folder as usual (what I said about "make doc" maybe applies to the CVS version, if I remember well). So you should have no problem to get those files and I don't see why you want to display the .xml files, since you should have also the other formats.
