If you compile by yourself MPICH2 locally I suggest to use CC=icc and FC=ifort, 
do not mix compilers. Most of the time the mixing is harmless but I would not 
bet money that it is _always_ harmless. Moreover MPICH2 is old, try Open MPI 
instead (http://www.open-mpi.org/)

Yes, it is called serial compilation :-)

./configure --enable-openmp --disable-parallel
