Interesting. It is implicitly assumed that each "image" keeps its symmetry
(if any) during the NEB run. This is not guaranteed, though, and may
actually lead to errors like the one shown, when the code tries to restart
from wavefunctions for the same image at the previous step. It is seldom a
problem because intermediate images have seldom any symmetry at all, but it
is something that may happen.
