Some of you may have, like me, wanted to run a Plex Media Server on your ARM machines, but were disappointed that the only ARM packages available were for various NAS appliances. I have just changed that.

Interestingly, QNAP ARM based NAS appliances are supported. These are based on the Marvell Kirkwood ARMv5 processor, and I already have RedSleeve working on those. So what I set out to do is take the QNAP ARM qpkg package, extract the binaries, repackage them into a src.rpm, and build a rpm from that.

The initial version you may want to test is available here:

Note that the source code for Plex Media Server is not available (it is free as in beer, but not as in speech), so the src.rpm doesn't include the source - it includes the pre-compiled binaries that plex provide in the binary package for the QNAP NAS appliances. Their ARM build does not include transcoding support because most ARM CPUs are too underpowered to be usable for real-time video stream transcoding. That means that only the DirectPlay mode is available. If you have media in a format that is not supported by your media playback device (e.g. Chromecast or one of the many clones), it will not work, and you will have to transcode the unsupported media files into a format your devices support (H.264 is usually a good bet).

If you have a use for such a thing, please test and report back any issues you encounter.
