Sounds like you replaced your main.inc.php. You may need to re-update
your settings. The language setting is:
$rcmail_config['locale_string'] = 'en';

explanatory but I am not sure about the DB part. I use my web hosts
phpMyAdmin interface. Should I be copying and pasting the contents
of update.sql or initial.sql? I just don't want to lose any of my
users address book contacts etc which I assume is housed here.

- run all commands in SQL/*.update.sql or re-initalize database with
*.initial.sql
- add these lines to /config/main.inc.php
