Problem was not dovecot login, but roundcube itself. I misunderstood what:
$config['auto_create_user'] =
meant, that this was the roundcube user, not the dovecot/postfix user
(which was already created). Changed it from false to true and it works
now.

1st is from install page and 2nd from webmail login page.
And why method=PLAIN? (I think I asked this question over a year ago
when I was last testing Roundcube...)
