For the record, and for those who might get stuck into it again, possibly including me :-) here is the solution to the issue I had.
My project pom.xml file contained the element dependencyManagement instead of the element dependencies as I had copied the project structure from another one. And mvn on the command line never complained. But under Eclipse, the Maven dependencies node was not shown.
