/usr/bin/java.
That's not untrue, there are symlinks for java, javac etc.
to /etc/alternatives and from there to /usr/lib/j2sdk1.5-sun/bin/java.

$ ls -l $JAVA_HOME/bin/java
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 63664 2004-09-20
16:52 /usr/lib/j2sdk1.5-sun/bin/java
