If there is sufficient demand I could add a munging layer into maven-proxy that
translated requests from clients into requests to upstream providers.

I was initially considering implementing this just using a PCRE (perl compatible
regular expression) attached to each repository definition.  At some point I
might consider using wagon, but there is no general need for this as yet.
