I always get a NPE when executing surefire:test.
Here's what I'm doing (see below for details):
$ m2 -DgroupId=myCompany -DartifactId=myApp -Dversion=0.1
archetype:create
$ cd myApp
$ m2 compiler:compile
$ m2 compiler:testCompile
$ m2 surefire:test
