Thanks that's what I was beginning to think after have looked thru the maven 2 site. Maybe I missed it but I didn't see anywhere on the site what you've said "m2 doesn't use maven.xml anymore. Custom goals should be written as plugins from now on." This seem like such a fundamental thing that is would be in bold on the getting started page.
