Thus you can try the last linkcheck plugin SNAPSHOT
It will be certainly faster.
maven plugin:download -Dmaven.repo.remote=http://www.ibiblio.org/maven,
http://cvs.apache.org/repository/ -DgroupId=maven
-DartifactId=maven-linkcheck-plugin -Dversion=1.4-SNAPSHOT
If it's not better, just rollback to the 1.3
