In our current Maven 1.0.2 environment, we have a few Python projects, and I wrote a Python plugin to handle compiling the Python code as well as running unit tests. It's been so long now (and I'm not really a Python person myself) that I don't think I can give a lot of help without doing a lot of research first, but you're welcome to my plugin code as a starting point if you like.
