ok, I'll try that. It's still a pity that not more maven plugins are maintained by the library authors themselves. Then a new maven plugin would be released at the same time that the library is released.

Sometimes you can "upgrade" plugin dependencies by specifying a <version>[...]</version> in the plugin/dependencies/dependency node. Not sure if it would work for PMD but its worth a shot.
