Hmm, I thought mirrorOf is only for your settings.xml... meaning the obvious
difference personal vs. project settings.

The discussion of using mirrorOf=* to mirror all repositories reminded
me of a question I have.

What is the difference between defining a mirror of central vs.
defining it in a <repository> (and <pluginRepository>) to override the
url? When would you use one over the other?

Some observations...

With a mirror, Maven continues to display the original url even though
it uses the mirror url behind the scenes. With it defined as a
repository, you see the 'real' url in the build output.

There has been some discusson of whether Maven should check multiple
mirrors and fall back to the original url, to avoid failed builds when
a single server is unavailable.
