There was one hiccup I found.  I used the archetype I created and specified:

groupid = net.sf.appname, 
package = net.sf.appname. 

The packagenames of the java files became:

package net/sf/appname.domain;

instead of:

package net.sf.appname.domain;

I'll submit a JIRA issue if this is not a user error.
