The point is to stay true to the spec. (And I'd say that right now we are pretty well true to it.) In that case all but the most brain- damaged phones will work. We perhaps should not be in the business of chasing compatibility with every (weird) phone!

correct... agree'ing here fully. We at Kannel side did mainly the same policy. Now, the "two lists" idea has an implication on how the projects conduct itself in the market/business.

Actually I suggest such an approach: having a positive compatibility list, with devices that pass a testbed (this goes towards MMS/MMSC cerficiation), and a negative list, but not simply saying "this phone does not work", moreover having the issue tracked via a bug tracking system (ie. Mantis or whatever). The benefit of the bugstracking issue is, that we (if established) as certification authortiy or reference pool member can provide as much information to the handset vendors as posible regarding the malfunctions of the phone against the specs.

I know that this needs all work, and an open source project can't be "planed" that cleanly like a professional business, but Paul and I may have there some intresting issues that are upcoming ;)

So, my 2cts.
