idea will be to implement "smsc drivers" in mBuni. This for the reason of using
other SMS gateways than Kannel. I am not sure if this is a good idea or the way
to go. But it is a thought.

At the moment, no. I had avoided it in order to simplify things on the
Mbuni side. Why would you want this? Perhaps that would helps guide our
thoughts on a possible change.
