I tried this, changing the localhost and I get the same problems. Doing nmap on the port I can see that it is closed.

You are sure you have no HTTP proxy or firewall in between that is not correctly configured? It would seem your VAS Gateway can't reach the mbuni mmsc port. That is, there is a failure at the network (rather than the HTTP) level because we don't even see an HTTP response code.
