I understand a few people who have done this (MM7), but I'll let them speak for themselves... On a technical note, what you are being told is not entirely accurate. The MM1 uses HTTP. Whether the IP traffic is over WSP or not is another matter. And we know that there has to be support for straight IP (not over WSP) because WAP 2.0 devices (such as Nokia E-series) bypass the normal old WAP stack and do straight IP.
What the networks usually prevent is MM1 access to their MMSC unless you are dialed up to their network (via GPRS for example).
