The default setup using SshServer.setUpDefaultServer() configures the following:
sshd.setChannelFactories(Arrays.<NamedFactory<Channel>>asList(
new ChannelSession.Factory(),
new ChannelDirectTcpip.Factory()));
So it should work. What kind of channels are you trying to configure ?
